The inaugural SEAexpo (Showbiz, Entertainment & Arts Expo) made its mark for the creative industries

The long awaited inaugural SEAexpo (Showbiz, Entertainment & Arts Expo) has come and gone. The nicely planned event took place on the 9th and 10th September 2014, at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown.
The SEAexpo is Africa’s exhibition and conference show for the creative industries. This first of its kind event for South Africa, brought together practitioners, hopefuls, influencers and thought-leaders from photography, music, arts & crafts, fashion, radio, TV, dance & poetry, to marketing and the likes. It also attracted those that support the creative industries such as government, investors & funders, financial sector, corporate, academic, etc. Some of the highly recognised names that appeared at the SEAexpo, in various capacities, include Deputy Minister Elizabeth Thabethe, Advocate Leslie Sedibe (Proudly South African CEO), DJ Sbu (entertainment personality), Greg Maloka (Kaya FM Managing director), Bob Mabena (broadcast veteran and Kaya FM presenter), Penny Lebyane (TV personality and Cliff Central presenter), Tshedi Moholo (Malaika lead singer), KB Motsilanyane (award winning singer and actress),DJ Shimza (renowned DJ), Yvonne Chaka Chaka (internationally recognised artist), Welcome Msomi (legendary playwright, producer, director) and many more.
The exhibition area saw various exhibits from the likes of Vuyani Dance Theatre, Contento Group, Nina Made in South Africa, PPM Attorneys, Old Mutual, Microsoft, Leadership 2020, Blackfuse Communications, Marcel Oudejans and many more. The exhibitors also brought great value to the event with their various entertainment and engagement activities such as a sterling performance from Vuyani Dance Theatre, magic from Marcel Oudejans, law workshops for the entertainment industry from PPM attorneys, Nina Made in South Africa dressing KB Motsilanyane, songs from Moshidi musical and many more.
Running concurrently to the exhibition was a conference show, where the theme of “creative industries role on the economic stage” was unpacked. This saw insightful, invigorating and life learning talks from Deputy Minister Thabethe (Department of Small Business Development), Advocate Leslie Sedibe (Proudly South African), Ashraf Johaardien (Head of UJ Arts & Culture centre), Microsoft’s Mteto Nyati (GM for Emerging Regions, Middle East and Africa), the legendary Welcome Msomi, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, DJ Sbu and a panel discussion that was facilitated by Kaya FM’s Bob Mabena which included the following panellists: Greg Maloka (Kaya FM Managing Director), DJ Shimza, Nic Regisford (Leadership 2020 CEO), Ilsa Grabe (media specialist from Carat SA). “This event made me so emotional and I am very proud that I am here to learn everything that I have learnt. This is indeed the exact kind of a platform and event that the creative industries need”, says KB Motsilanyane (Award winning singer and actress).
“There was a lot that we had to learn from the inaugural SEAexpo and thus have a lot to do, in preparation for the 2015 SEAexpo”, says Peter ‘Blasto’ Sibeko (SEAexpo founder).
